Keeping children organized is a task in itself. Children do not know organize themselves, so it is up to us to provide them with the tools to learn. Organized closets can save a lot of time in the mornings when getting ready for school. If a child's closet is organized, he is more likely to find everything he is looking for, and more likely to be able to choose their own outfits, giving him a sense of independence that he needs.
Instructions
1. Empty out the child's closet. Lay out all clothes on the bed. It is easiest to start with a clean slate. Use this time to wash down the walls and repaint if necessary. This is also a great time to go through the clothes and donate anything that no longer fits or is worn.
2. Install one hanging bar across the top of the closet. On one side, hang up any dresses, coats, or longer clothing items. On the other side, hang up shirts and sweaters. Hang up pants so that they are draped over the hanger. If needed for space, you can hang up two pairs of pants on one hanger.
3. Install a lower bar across one half of the closet. If there are not many longer clothing items, this bar could extend to 3/4 of the length of the closet. This is for pants and skirts. Hang up pants so that they are draped over the hanger. If needed for space, you can hang up two pairs of pants on one hanger.
4. Install a hanging shelf system. There are some that are made to velcro around the bar. This works great for laying out clothes for the week. Find one that has at least five shelves for each day of the week. This works great for school-age kids, and keeps them organized all week. It also helps parents know that they have outfits for every day. Make sure to include underwear and socks with each outfit.
5. Puchase shoe shelves, often a small shelf about one foot of the ground, in which a second shelf can be purchased to fit on top for stacking. This is where all shoes should be kept.
6. Use any upper shelves for storing items that cannot be hung up and may not fit into dressers, such as bulky sweaters. This is also a great place to store extra games and toys. If the child cannot readily reach any upper shelves, keep a step stool in the closet for this purpose.
