Organize a House for Little Money
An organized home reduces the stress of everyday living. By using recycled items, you can organize a house for little money. The process begins by taking an inventory of your household items. Take items that you have not used in several years and throw them away, recycle them or give them to a charity. The items that remain will need a space assigned to them (the golden rule of organizing is a space for everything and everything in its place). Create holding spaces for like items such as a cupboard, closet, basket, bag, or box. Make a list of what items will need containers. Then create your own containers by repurposing household products. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Clear out clutter by removing all items from your home that are not used. Use three containers to sort unused items; label them garbage, recycle and charity. Dispose of the items appropriately based on their designation.
2. Repurpose small plastic food containers and boxes into drawer organizers. Use for items such as makeup, pens, paperclips, and sewing supplies. Wash and dry the containers before using. Cut and shape storage containers from empty bleach bottles, laundry detergent bottles, cereal boxes, shoe boxes and other empty boxes.
3. Use cabinets and drawers to store items. Place like items together. Create a space for the cleaning supplies, office supplies, paperwork, clothing, food, tools and toys.
4. Organize your wardrobe by season and then by use, such as work, play or special occasion. Hang scarves, ties and belts on hangers or hooks. Use hooks to hang purses and hats on the closet wall. Keep a laundry basket in the closet to collect dirty laundry and dry cleaning items.
5. Use a basket to store lotions, makeup, hairspray and other bathroom products under the sink. Roll towels and washcloths to display on the bathroom counter. Install hooks on the back of the bathroom door to hang robes.
6. Arrange your dishes in the cupboards by placing like items together. Store plates, glasses, and silverware that are used daily close to the dishwasher. Create a baking center with baking ingredients and utensils in one location.
7. Decorate children' s bedrooms with furniture that can also be used for storage. Use bookshelves, plastic bins, and plastic containers such as coffee cans or mayonnaise jars to hold toys, crayons and game pieces.
8. Keep all your schedules and invitations in one place. Collect free calendars to organize your appointments. Use magnets to turn the refrigerator into a bulletin board.
9. Set up a filing system to organize household records. Create a file for bills, medical records, household, automobiles, employment, etc. Use a cardboard box to store the files or invest in a filing cabinet.
