Painting Metal Closet Door Frames

Blend the closet into the room with complementing colors.

Painting a room gives it a fresh new look and feel, but sliding closet doors often get overlooked in the painting process. You can paint the metal frames holding the doors to blend them into the rest of the room, hide any rust or blemishes on the frame itself or contrast the room using a different color. Use care when painting door frames to make sure you don't inhibit the door sliding ability. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Slide the doors to the center point where they can be lifted from the track. Remove the closet doors and set them aside.

2. Remove the frame by unscrewing it, if possible. There are usually three to five screws located on each side of the closet door frame. Take the frame outside or somewhere you can safely paint it without worrying about dripping. Paint over a drop cloth if you don't have a designated painting area or cannot remove the metal frame.

3. Clean the metal by washing it with a cloth and water. Lightly sand the surface to remove any rust and to create an adhesive surface for the paint. Wipe any dust off the metal with a damp cloth.

4. Paint a coat of primer designed to stick to metal on the metal frame. Avoid painting the inside track. This area can cause the door to stick if painted. Allow the paint to dry.

5. Cover the primer with the color paint of your choice. Use a paint that is designed to stick to metal. Use small even strokes to prevent streaks or unusual patterns from drying into the frame. Allow the paint to dry.

6. Return the frame to the closet, if it was removed, screwing it in tightly. Return the doors to their proper slots in the slider.
