Set hanger rods at varying heights to create more closet storage.
A closet never seems big enough, but several options can make the most of the space you do have. Creating a bigger closet involves incorporating additional shelving and hanging rods into the space, along with better organization and proper storage of items outside the closet. Removing bulky items such as blankets, extra purses or unused shoes will help make your closet bigger without unnecessary items taking up so much space. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Remove old clothes and shoes from the closet. Cleaning out a closet of items you never wear provides the first step in having a bigger closet. Place items in boxes or plastic trash bags and drop off at local charities that accept clothing. Throw away torn or soiled clothing.
2. Add additional hanging rods in the closet. Place the existing rod a foot higher in the closet. Hang shirts and pants on the top rod. Add the second rod 2 inches below the hanging clothes, providing additional hanging space.
3. Place shelving or drawers inside the closet. Ceiling-to-floor sizes supply storage space for sweaters, shirts, belts, ties and other items that don't require hanging.
4. Remove bulky items such as blankets from closets and place them into plastic storage containers. Store books, purses or other items not used regularly into containers and place under a bed.
5. Hang a shoe organizer in the closet and set shoes inside. Removing shoes from the closet floor reduces clutter and creates a bigger closet space.
6. Group dresses, slacks, jeans and shirts together. A mismatch of scattered clothes makes a closet seem small. Placing similar items together creates the illusion of a larger closet and allows you to find your clothing faster.
