Install Bifold Doors On A New Closet

Paint or decorate your bifold doors to match your room's decor.

Bifold doors are a perfect option for closets, allowing the doorway to be fully closed or open without the floor and wall space needed for a conventional door's swing radius. The installation method for a single two-panel bifold door is the same for double-door units and applies to any bifold door size being installed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Mark the center of the wall thickness at both upper corners of the door opening, then use the edge of a level or a chalk line to connect the two marks.

2. Level the center line marked in step 1 to the floor on the pivoting side of the door opening, using a plumb bob or level. For wood or vinyl flooring, mark the center point on the floor surface. For carpeted floors, mark the center point at the base of the wall.

3. Align the predrilled screw holes in the metal top track on the center line marked in step 1 and mark each of the holes using an awl. Use a hacksaw to trim the track length if it's longer than the width of the opening prior to marking the screw holes, making certain to cut the end of the track opposite the preinstalled top pivot bracket.

4. Place the top track against the top surface of the door opening, centered on the screw holes marked in step 3. Positioning the top pivot bracket at the desired side, secure the track in place with the screws provided.

5. Position the bottom door pivot bracket aligned with the center line marked in step 2, with the notched slot perpendicular to the face of the opening and the shorter upturned angle against the vertical wall surface. Secure the pivot bracket to the base of the wall and the floor with the screws provided. For carpeted floors, the pivot bracket cannot be installed directly on the carpet and you should securely nail a small wood block to the floor first, then attach the pivot bracket to the top of the block.

6. Rest the door flat on the floor with the outer face up. Install the spring-loaded top pivot pin in the predrilled hole in the top of the door on the pivoting side. Use the door manufacturer's drilling template to drill all of the required holes if the door's pivot holes are not predrilled.

7. Install the spring-loaded track guide wheel in the predrilled top hole on the closing side of the door by sliding the plastic sleeve of the guide fully into the hole.

8. Install the adjustable bottom pivot pin in the bottom of the door on the pivoting side in the predrilled hole. Adjust the length of the threaded pivot pin to approximately 1/2 inch below the door bottom by turning it counterclockwise.

9. Measure the horizontal distance from the center of the top pivot pin to the pivoting edge of the door. Adjust the top track pivot location to this dimension plus 1/4 inch by loosening the locking screw in the bracket using a screwdriver, moving the bracket as needed, then retightening the locking screw.

10. Raise the door to an upright position next to the door opening. Move the door into place by lifting it to insert the top pivot pin into the top pivot bracket hole. Swing the base of the door inward to set the notched adjustable bottom pivot into the notched slot of the floor bracket installed in step 5.

11. Adjust the vertical edge of the pivoting side of the door by moving the bottom pivot screw left or right as needed to equalize the gap from top to bottom.

12. Depress the spring-loaded top track guide wheel to inset it into the track channel.

13. Close the door and check the edge spacing at both sides of the door. The door should fit flush to the wall or adjacent door at the closing edge and should be spaced approximately 1/4 inch from the wall surface on the pivoting side. Adjust the top pivot bracket or bottom pivot pin as needed to adjust the door.

14. Measure the distance between the top of the door and the bottom lip of the top track. This space should be approximately 1/2 inch. Adjust the door's height as needed by lifting the door slightly from the bottom to free the bottom pivot pin from the bottom bracket, then turn the threaded bottom pivot pin clockwise to lower the door or counterclockwise to raise it. Recheck the side gap measurement after replacing the pivot pin in the bottom bracket.

15. Attach the door handle by passing the handle screw provided through the predrilled hole from the back and screwing the handle onto it until tight. Use the door manufacturer's drilling template to drill all of the required holes, if the door's pivot holes are not predrilled.

16. Repeat steps 5 through 15 for the adjacent door in double bi-fold door installations, and install the center door guides provided following the manufacturer's specifications.
