A modern bench serves as a small storage device in addition to a comfortable seating area. They can be constructed for use in a a large, walk-in closet, in a foyer or mudroom, in front of a bay window or even at the end of a bed, and they aren't difficult to build. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Cut the wooden post piece and OSB board. Cut the 2-by-2 piece into four sections measuring approximately 15 inches long. Cut the OSB board into six pieces, four pieces measuring 4 feet long by 2 feet wide and two pieces measuring 2 feet by 2 feet. Use the miter saw to make all cuts.
2. Attach the four 2-by-2 pieces to the corners of one of the OSB pieces to make a table platform. Drive the nails through the OSB piece and into the centers of the 2-by-2 pieces, leaving 1/4 inch of the nail sticking out to sink in with the nail set; this creates the bottom surface of the bench.
3. Turn the constructed piece over so that the OSB board is sitting against the floor. Attach two 2-by-4 pieces to each side of the bench structure, driving nails through the outer OSB pieces and into the 2-by-2 frame pieces. Attach the end pieces measuring 2 feet by 2 feet.
4. Sand all exterior surfaces of the bench, including the remaining 2-foot-by-4-foot piece that has not been attached yet. Apply wood paint or stain to the exterior of the bench and the remaining piece and allow all surfaces to dry overnight or longer before continuing construction on the bench.
5. Attach two hinge fixtures to the back of the bench; use the included screws and set the hinges an equal distance apart and an equal distance from each end of the bench. Set the remaining 2-foot-by-4-foot piece on top of the bench, and attach the other sides of the hinge fixtures to the bench lid.
6. Make a cushioned and comfortable seat. Cut a piece of fabric measuring approximately 6 inches longer and wider than the bench lid. Cut a 2-inch-thick foam cushion measuring exactly 2 feet by 4 feet.
7. Set the cushion on the lid of the bench and cover with the fabric. Align the fabric so that roughly 3 inches hang over along all edges of the cushion. Cuff the material underneath the cushion and attach to the bench lid with a staple gun, stapling every 1/2 inch around the perimeter of the lid.
