Measure For A Double Rod Closet

Installing double closet rods adds clothes-hanging space to your closet and allows you to expand your wardrobe. However, double closet rods have different space requirements than a single rod. Double rods need more vertical space but less horizontal space, in some instances. Before you finish your new closet plans, measure for your double rods and make the project more successful. This measurement takes only about 20 minutes to complete and it is a big time-saver. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width and depth of the closet. Make sure your have at least 24 inches of depth to hang clothes in the closet. Many bedroom closets have 24 to 27 inches of depth. If you have a walk-in closet, just measure the width of the walls. Plan on having 34 inches of width for the double rods. If you have longer rods, additional support brackets will be necessary.

2. Measure the height of the ceiling in your closet. Many ceilings are 8 to 9 feet high, which is ideal for double closet rods. You need at least 82 inches of height to install a double rod, since the top rod hangs at 80 inches, and 2 inches of space is required above the rod to hang clothes..

3. Measure the area for the shelving and single rod. Include a horizontal space of 36 inches for shelving and between 30 and 40 inches for an additional single rod, depending on your particular needs. Remember it takes at least 1 inch of closet rod space to hang a single shirt or pair of pants. Suits take up to 4 inches of horizontal rod space.

4. Make a mark at 80 inches and then again at 40 inches on the wall where you choose to hang the double rods with a pencil. Measure up the walls. Place the rods wherever there is at least 34 inches of space along the wall.
