If you closet has been overtaken by dirty clothes or unused and unnecessary items, you may need to consider organizing your closet to eliminate some of the clutter. Stores sell different forms of closet organizers, or you can build your own organizer to suit your specific needs. You should determine your needs, and design your closet around those needs. Unused or Unnecessary Items
You should periodically take inventory of the items in your closet. Assess whether you need each of the items. Store the items you use most regularly at the front and middle of your closet. You should remove and either dispose of or sell all of the items you determine aren't necessary. If you haven't used a particular item in your closet for over a year, chances are it is not a necessity.
Consider Your Needs
Determine what purpose your closet will serve, and consider how you should design the closet to meet those needs. Purchasing closet organizers to meet your needs is one option, but you may also need to build your own organization system to suit your needs. If you have a smaller closet, design the organizer to utilize all of your available space.
Labels
If your closet is large enough to contain items -- whether you use them much or not -- use labels to mark items. Set items that aren't regularly used in totes with lids, and place them in the rear of the closet. Place the most used labeled items where they are most easily accessible. Another option, if you don't want to apply labels to your totes or containers, is to store items in clear containers so that you can more easily recognize what items are stored where.
Move Seasonal Items
If closet space allows, move items that are currently out of season to another closet in your home. Move both shoes and clothes that you won't wear for another six months to free up some needed space. Once you move seasonal items out of your closet, organize what remains in either a store-bought organizer or a homemade organization system. Either way, your search for some type of organization will help you save time in the long run.
