Diy Cedar Closet

A cedar closet can add a wonderful scent to your clothes while providing a preservative effect that will keep away moths and bugs. The average do-it-yourself homeowner can install a cedar closet in one to two days, depending on the size of the project. Does this Spark an idea?

Tools and Materials

You will need a hammer, finish nailer, compound miter saw, stud finder, tape measure, level and a caulk gun. If you don't have these tools, then you can rent or purchase them from a hardware or tool rental store. You will need to purchase construction adhesive, finish nails and 1-by-4 or 1-by-6 tongue-and-groove cedar.

Installation

Find the studs framing in your closet using a stud finder. Mark the studs at the floor and ceiling with a pencil, and snap a chalk line from top to bottom. Use the chalk line as a reference point when installing the cedar boards.

When measuring the distance between the walls of the interior of the closet, take away 1/4 inch so the boards will fit. Install the back wall first, then the sides and finally the front. Remove the door trim from the inside of the closet, and reinstall it later after the cedar has been installed. Level the first board that begins at the bottom of the wall.

Make sure that the groove side of the cedar is facing up. Apply construction adhesive to the back side of the cedar, and nail each board in place at each wall stud. Install the following cedar board by placing the tongue down and into the groove of the previous board. After the entire closet has been lined with cedar, rip 2-inch pieces from the remaining boards, and trim the corners with the rips. Do not apply sealer to the cedar.
