Paint A Melamine Wardrobe

Melamine is a very hard, smooth surface that is usually used on particle board furniture. It is not only possible, but quite easy to paint melamine. The trick lies in properly prepping the surface as well as using the right primer. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clean the wardrobe with soap and water, making sure to scrub off any dirt. Allow to dry thoroughly.

2. Remove any hardware on the wardrobe. If it has doors, you may want to remove the doors from its hinges to make it easier to paint.

3. Sand the surfaces with fine-grit sandpaper. The purpose is not to remove the melamine coating, but to roughen the smooth surface to give the paint something to adhere to.

4. Wipe down the surface of your wardrobe to remove any dust caused by the sandpaper.

5. Cover any areas that you don't want painted with painter's tape.

6. Apply your first coat of primer using a roller (for best results) or a paint brush. It is better to apply several thin coats rather than one thick coat of paint.

7. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next coat. You may also opt to repeat Steps 3 and 4 (sanding) between each coat for the best results.

8. Apply the top coat of paint. Repeat if desired.

9. Replace any hardware you removed once the wardrobe has dried completely, which usually takes two to three days.
