Kinds Of Closets

A linen closet typically features shelves so towels, sheets and other items may be folded for storage.

When it comes to storing items your home, closets are one of the most traditional options. Because they typically feature doors, they allow for items to be stored without being seen, so you can maintain a neat, organized look for your house. There are several types of closets, classified according to what you plan to store, how they are designed and where they are. While you can place any items that you please in your closet, understanding what type of closet it is may help you maximize its storage potential. Does this Spark an idea?

Broom Closet

A broom closet is intended for storing cleaning supplies. It is usually a tall, narrow space so it can accommodate mops, brooms, vacuums and other cleaning tools that might not fit in a shorter closet. However, because these tools are thin, a broom closet often is not very wide, and so may not be suitable for bulkier items.

Linen Closet

Typically located near or inside a bathroom, a linen closet is designed for housing linens such as towels, bedsheets, comforters and quilts. It can also be used to store extra pillows, curtains and unopened toiletries. Unlike other types of closets, which have a rod for hanging items, a linen closet often has a series of shelves and drawers so linens can be folded for storage. Many include adjustable shelves so the closet can be customized.

Coat Closet

A coat closet is often placed near the entrance of home so family members can easily deposit their coats, jackets, hats and gloves when they enter. Like many traditional closets, it contains a rod that allows outerwear to be hung with hangars. Because it stores bulky coats and jackets, a coat closet must be wide enough to accommodate bulky items. It may also contain hooks on the back of the door where bags and scarves may be hung and a shelf above the rod where hats, gloves and other items that cannot be hung may be kept. The bottom of the closet is ideal storage for boots and shoes.

Wall Closet

A wall closet is a traditional closet that is built into the wall and primarily used to store clothing. Also known as a reach-in closet, it is usually found in a bedroom and contains a rod for use with hangers. A wall closet may also include a shelf above the rod for storing purses, hats, shoes or other items that do not fit on hangers. Wall closets vary in size but can be designed to be quite wide if there is enough space. Depending on their size, they may have single or double doors.

Walk-In Closet

One of the most coveted types of closets is a walk-in closet. As the name implies, it is a large enough space to walk around in and provides significant storage options. Typically, a portion is devoted to rods where clothes may be hung, but shelves and drawers are often part of the design as well. Some walk-in closets have built-in shoe racks as well. If the closet is large enough, an island may be placed in the center where shelves and drawers are included or a vanity may be set up for makeup application.
