Ideas On Closet Shelves

Closet shelves make more space to store items.

Adding more shelves to a closet space makes it possible to categorize stored clothes and items according to type and usage. Since the contents of a closet are typically behind closed doors, it is an ideal space to pack away things that do not make a decorative statement or are not in current use. Knowing where to place shelves, and their appropriate functions, will transform a simple closet into an efficient storage nook. Does this Spark an idea?

The Standard Shelf

Most closets have a single shelf just above the hanging clothes rod. This shelf keeps personal items within arm's reach, but for a large volume of clothes, shoes, accessories and household items, this single shelf is not enough. Increasing a closet's storage space can incorporate this existing shelf into the overall closet space planning.

Shoes

Installing one to two shelves near the base of the closet instantly creates a lot of space for shoes, sneakers and boots. Use the height measurements of your shoes to determine the best shelf spacing for your shoes. And by installing the lower shelf a few inches above the floor, the floor space underneath becomes bonus shoe storage space.

Out-of-Season Items

Maximize the height space of the closet by installing shelves near the ceiling of the closet. Space the higher shelf at least 12 inches from the ceiling to accommodate quilts, pillows, bags or other bulky items.

Install another shelf just below this one to store sweaters and jackets for easy access both in and out of season.

Vertical Shelves

Some closet spaces have underutilized sides and corners that can be transformed into a place for vertical shelves. These shelves can house folded tops, pants and skirts as well as more sweaters, jackets and shoes that could not fit on the other shelves.

Door Shelves

If the closet door swings out instead of sliding to the side, this is more closet space to maximize. Installing a slim shelving unit on the door that does not obstruct the door from opening and closing becomes an easy access space for storing more shoes, purses and accessories.

Closet Organizer Systems

An alternative to making custom shelves for a closet is to install a closet organizer system. Closet organizers have several parts for hanging clothes, shelving and pull-out drawers. Some systems have clothes-hanging parts at the base of each shelf.

As the layout of a closet space is planned based on its intended function, the person may gain more space to store folded garments and accessories. These organizers are fitted to the dimensions of the closet space, maximizing its storage capacity.
