First de-clutter to make space for storage solutions.
If space is at a premium in your home, you will want to maximize storage space, using every available inch. Closets can do much more than hold a single rack for hanging clothes. Learn a few tricks to boost your closet's storage potential in order to keep your clothes available rather than piled in a heap on the closet floor. Does this Spark an idea?
De-Clutter
Ruthlessly eliminate whatever you rarely use yet takes up closet space. If you have a basement or other larger area, relocate items you don't need on a regular basis. Or think about holding a yard sale or donating old clothes to a thrift shop.
Vertical Space
Buy a second rod to hang beneath the top closet rod to hold more clothes. Or, if your handyman skills are limited, buy hangers which hold multiple clothes. You can find hangers which hook on to each other.
Closet Doors
Use your closet doors to do more than hide your clothes. Purchase an over the door storage solution such as a shoe rack or a short rod to hold additional clothes on hangers. You can also use hooks to hold purses and tote bags.
Structure
A closet which contains only a single rack of clothes on hangers is a lost opportunity for organizing and storage. Add bins, shelves, baskets, boxes or small drawers to hold everything from scarves to sweaters to underwear. Many stores have closet organizing sections where you can purchase modular, plastic storage units, or take a DIY approach with cardboard boxes and/or small chests of drawers from the thrift shop. Whatever you buy or make to organize your closet, take careful note of measurements before shopping.
No Wire Hangers
Padded hangers offer more than just snob appeal; they actually help you stay organized. Clothes are more likely to stay put on either wood hangers or fabric-covered hangers. This means you won't have to dig through a pile at the bottom of the closet to find your favorite jacket.
