Beaches Near Paterson Nj

Paterson is located about an hour away from the nearest beach.


Paterson, New Jersey is an industrial city located 20 miles northwest of New York City. Nicknamed the "silk city," Paterson was known for its silk production in the late 1800s. Currently, Patterson is known for its diversity, as well the frequently visited waterfalls known as The Great Falls of Paterson. The closet beaches from Paterson are located on the New York and New Jersey shorelines.


Sandy Hook, New Jersey


Sandy Hook is approximately 60 miles away from Paterson and requires several toll roads to be reached. This seven mile long beach is located on the Sandy Hook Peninsula, situated just south of Manhattan. The beach and surrounding area is famous for its diverse bird species, attracting bird watchers from all over the world. Surf fishing and swimming is possible at Sandy Beach, and those wishing to visit the Big Apple can even take a 40 minute ferry ride to downtown Manhattan.


Long Branch, New Jersey


Located about an hour and a half drive away from Patterson, Long Branch is one of the most populated cities on the Jersey Shore. Beach admission costs $5 for an all-day pass, while a yearlong season pass can be purchased for $35. Children under the age of 16 -- as well as adults over the age of 60 -- are not charged for beach access. The newly constructed 7 Presidents Oceanfront Park offers a boat launch, ocean fishing, beach volleyball, playground and public restrooms. Recently, Long Branch has experienced higher tourism due to a newly built boardwalk and freshly inaugurated beach high-rise condos.


Coney Island


Located at the furthermost point of Brooklyn, Coney Island can be reached from Paterson in less than an hour. However, a typical day of traffic will most likely double the travel time. A quiet, virtually deserted beach town in the winter months, Coney Island comes to life from Easter until the end of the summer. Stretching four miles long, the never-ending boardwalk is the home to over 50 attractions and rides. If you visit Coney Island, make sure to try one of the world famous hot dogs and to watch the free fireworks, offered every Friday night during the season.


Rockaway Beach


One of New York's only free beaches, Rockaway is easily accessible by public transportation and gets extremely crowded in the summer months. If you are traveling from Paterson by car, you will have an hour to two hour journey ahead of you, depending on traffic. Rockaway beach offers excellent waves for surfing when there are swells, while swimming and fishing are possible when the water is calm. A long boardwalk, several playgrounds, barbecue areas and sports areas guarantee a fun day for all.
