Use storage units to help organize a small apartment.
Small apartments may not provide much in terms of space, but they are able to be organized like any other apartment. Apartments with little space usually have rooms with multiple functions. Therefore, organization is the key to having an apartment that isn't cluttered. Organizing a small apartment doesn't mean that everything you own has to be given away or thrown out. Use existing space to have an organized home where you can relax. Does this Spark an idea?
Hidden Storage
Buy items that have two roles--decoration and storage. Storage ottomans, TV cabinets or even over-the-toilet space savers all hide items while remaining stylish. "Try a storage trick such as skirting a table. It can triple-task as a television stand, dining table and work surface," suggests Better Homes and Gardens. Try trunks at the foot of the bed. Make sure to get one that is scaled to the size of the room. Use decorative folders and binders to hold CDs or DVDs. Use the space under the bed to store winter clothes, shoes or even bills. There are many tasteful choices in under-the-bed storage units to help keep you organized.
Headboards
Use the space above and around the bed to add storage to the room. Buy two narrow book shelves and place them on opposite sides of the bed. They can be used for books, to organize papers or for shoes. "Use pretty woven baskets and fabric-covered storage boxes on the shelves for attractive organization," HGTV.com suggests. Buy wooden storage boxes and stack them against the wall above the bed. Try wire racks or a wall unit if you don't want boxes. Setting the bed on top of the storage also works. Use storage as rails for the bed and add pull-out drawers for storage.
Floating
Floating items from the ceiling frees up the precious floor space for other bits and pieces. Floating works well in many rooms of the house, especially the closets. Attach a chain to the ceiling in the closet and place hangers, belts or purses from it. In the kitchen, use a pot rack and save the cabinet for other items. For the kids, nail cups to a piece of wood and hang it on the wall to hold pencils, crayons and scissors. Buy floating shelves for items in the living room. Hang the shelves on the wall or use wire to hang them from the ceiling.
