Make A Builtin Dresser

Using the storage space hidden behind a knee wall is not only useful but when done right can be a beautiful addition to any home. With basic carpentry skills, building a dresser into the wall is a great way to open up a room and expand storage space. Knowing a few tricks to opening and preparing the wall you build the dresser into makes this a good woodworking project. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Locate the studs along the wall and determine the dressers placement. Look for wires and pipes behind the wall prior to cutting the drywall. Mark the location of the studs and use a drywall saw to cut a hole in the wall.

2. Look for joists or other obstacles that require special considerations in the building of the dresser. Measure the space available behind the wall as well as the size of the opening before purchasing a pre-cut, unassembled dresser that matches the measurements.

3. Assemble the frame of the dresser inside the wall including the back, top and side panels. Align the dresser with opening and secure the frame to the floor with 3 inch wood screws when the dresser edge is flush with the outside of the wall opening.

4. Install the roller hardware into the frame and set the drawers in place. Test the drawers to verify they roll smoothly and adjust the hardware per the manufacturer's instruction is necessary.

5. Stain the outside molding to match the finish of the dresser and cut to the correct lengths with a miter saw. Secure the molding with finishing nails and enjoy the new built-in dresser.
