A large laundry room is a big benefit in many houses, especially those with little closet space in the bedrooms. Taking a large laundry room and making it functional as a walk in closet isn't hard and can be done for a little money or you can go all out and spend quite a bit it's all up to you. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Clear out the laundry room, leaving behind only the washer and dryer. By clearing out the room before you begin you will be able to see the room with fresh eyes. This will give you a clean slate on which to start your transformation and allow you to see the room in a whole new light than before.
2. Make a list of what is important for you to have in this room and where it needs to be in proximity to the unmovable items that are in the room. For instance, you'll want to make sure you have a flat surface near the dryer for folding clothes and you'll want to be sure that you have a shelf near the washing machine to hold detergent, fabric softener and bleach.
3. Compare your "needs" list to the things you already have and make a shopping list for the rest of the items.
4. Decide on a wood finish, metal finish and color scheme for your closet. Keeping matching finishes and colors will help make your closet look more organized and more pleasant to walk into every day. When making your decisions, take clues from the items that are planned for the room.
5. Go shopping. Big box department stores and home improvement stores are the best placed to shop for items such as trash cans, hangers, laundry baskets and other organizational tools for your walk in closet. These stores often have many different price ranges and styles to choose for and will limit the amount of driving around town that you'll have to do.
6. Assemble any pieces that require assembly. If you aren't proficient with a screwdriver, ask the store where you bought your pieces if they offer assembly.
7. Move in the largest pieces of your closet into the room. Keep consulting your "needs" list when deciding what piece needs to go where.
8. Move in the rest of your items in size order. Remember to go up with storage options whenever possible. Example: Stacking cubes for sweaters three high is better than putting each cube on the ground one next to the other.
