No mandated minimum height exists for closet rods, but standard heights for closet rods do exist. However, the best height for your closet rod depends on which type of closet you are installing it in and what will hang on the rod. Does this Spark an idea?
Bedroom Closet Rods
Typical bedroom closet rods hang at 45 1/2 inches from the floor, which is just under 4 feet and allows plenty of room for hanging shirts, pants and even coats. This height also allows for hanging pants right from the waistline on clip hangers instead of draping them over the clothing hanger rod, which often forms a small crease in the center of the pants. If you are hanging longer dresses, hang the rod a little higher at 50 inches so the dress does not touch the floor.
Hallway Coat Closet Rods
Coat closet rods hang higher from the floor because they accommodate long overcoats and other items, for instance sleeping bags and snow suits. These rods hang at 5 feet or taller, which is 60 inches. Depending on how long your overcoat is, the rod may hang at 6 feet. Measure the length of your longest coat, and add a foot to allow for storage of shoes and boots beneath the garments. The height also depends on how high overhead shelves are. Position the rod at least 6 inches below the shelves to allow enough clearance to remove hangers.
Double Closet Rods
You might want to use double closet rods to free up space in your closet. The double closet rod is simply two closet rods hung one on top of the other in a horizontal fashion across the closet. Since most closets measure 8 to 9 feet in total ceiling height, hang the uppermost closet rod at 80 1/4 inches while the bottom rod hangs at 39 1/4 inches, which allows for 39 inches of space to hang clothing between each rod and between the floor and the second rod.
Closet Rod Height Exceptions
Some exceptions to the rules exist. You may require more space to hang extra long dresses or overcoats if you are taller, for instance, and therefore your clothing items are longer. Since you are taller, reaching a higher hanging closet rod is also easier. Hang the rods at a height that allows for enough clearance below the garments, so the bottoms do not brush against the floor or items stored on the floor, and so the hangers, which hang about 5 inches below the rod, are easy to reach. Hanging double rods at 84 and 44 inches may provide enough room for longer clothes while still being accessible for someone who is well over 6 feet tall, for instance.
