A well-stocked, organized pantry can make meal variety less of a planning nightmare and the preparation less challenging, for the housewife or the professional cook. The basic rule is that you can never have too much shelf storage. Whether you are starting from scratch or installing additional shelving, the procedure for simple storage shelf between two side walls is a simple project and can be modified for shelving of any length or configuration. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Measure to the height of the shelf with a tape measure, from the floor surface, making a pencil mark in the corners at both ends of the shelf location ¾ inch below the desired final shelf height.
2. Connect the two marks, using a level to ensure the line is straight and level. This will be the position of the rear shelf support board.
3. Extend a level horizontal line approximately 12 inches from both ends of the line marked in Step 2. This will be the location of the end support boards for the shelf.
4. Run a stud finder along the length of the lines marked in steps 2 and 3, making a small pencil line at the center of each stud location just above the horizontal pencil line. These marks will help in attaching the support boards to the wall. Note that at the end support marks placed in Step 3, a wall stud may be beyond the 12-inch line, but will need to be marked anyway and the end support board will be cut longer to attach to the wall stud for the best support.
5. Measure the horizontal dimension of the line marked in Step 2 and cut a piece of 1-by-2 pine to this length, using a circular saw or hand saw.
6. Hold the 1-by-2 pine support board cut in Step 5 flat against the wall, with the top edge aligned with the horizontal line marked in Step 2, and attach to the wall with a hammer and two vertically placed 8d finish nails at each stud location marked in Step 4.
7. Measure two 1-by-2 pine end support boards to 10½ inches long. If this length will not reach the wall stud at both ends, measure the length that reaches the stud at both ends and cut the 1-by-2 pine end support boards to the same length. Attach with with two vertically placed 8d finish nails at the inside corner and at the stud location.
8. Cut a length of 1-by-12 pine to the rear shelf support length determined in Step 5 minus ... inch, then place it horizontally on top of the shelf support boards installed in steps 6 and 7. Press the 1-by-12 shelf board tight to the rear wall and attach to the support boards with 6d finish nails approximately 10 inches apart.
