Builtin Wardrobes Ideas

Carved and elegant, or smooth and simple, a built in wardrobe can save space and time.

Built-in wardrobes can be added to closets, extra corners in your home and many more wasted spaces that sit empty or unorganized. The choice in doors and drawer styles can be customized to fit any decor, from elegantly carved wood in Victorian or other old-world themes to sleek lacquered finishes in Asian or contemporary interior design. The ideas for behind the doors should be tailored just as personally as the outside. Does this Spark an idea?

Organizing Clothes

A rod is a must for hanging space. Even if you have limited dress clothes or none at all, you never know when you may need a hangar or two for future use. (Until that time, you can use the rod to hang additional organizational items on such as baskets or storage bags.) Add shelves to fold sweaters, t-shirts, jeans and other clothing items that do not need to be hung up. Use an adjustable system, with one shelf for each type of item, that can be moved up or down as you gain or get rid of things. Drawers for your underwear or lingerie are also a good built-in wardrobe idea because even though it is all behind closed doors you do not want the embarrassment of visitors looking inside and seeing something you'd rather they don't.

Accessory Organization

Don't forget about storage for the extra parts of your wardrobe.

Other pieces to your ensembles should also be considered. Give shoes their own living space with pull-out shelves to keep even the ones in back that you rarely wear within easy reach. Hooks for your hats and purses can be added to the sides, as well as the back of the doors. For men, a tie rack that turns to display the whole collection is great for rushed mornings. Add a built-in jewelry box in one of the drawers, even a small one to house earrings or necklaces when changing at night until they can be brought to your larger one elsewhere in the home. (Helps you stop losing pieces on nightstands or dresser tops.)

Extra Elements

Add extra elements that will help you get dressed faster.

Lighting is very important, especially in larger built-in wardrobes. Ideas include hanging a fluorescent light right above the rod or a few stick-on push lights to the side walls. Hang a full-length mirror on one of the inside doors, or at least a small one where you can check your hair before running out the door. Consider adding a small beauty shelf to hold your makeup, lotions, and hair accessories for a one-stop dressing shop. If the space allows, build a small vanity into the bottom of it for your beauty needs. Buy a small-enough chair or stool to fit underneath it, or simply place one next to the built-in wardrobe on the outside. This is helpful to reach items in taller built-ins anyway, even if you do not have a vanity.
