Much of the space in many closets is wasted. One way of making a closet more efficient is by placing two hanging rods in the closet. This can effectively double the hanging space in a closet; however, the hanging rods must be placed at the right height to take full advantage of the arrangement. Does this Spark an idea?
The Right Height for Closet Rods
If you decide to place two hanging rods in your closet, the first decision to make is the width of the lower rod. Determine whether the lower rod will extend to the full width of the closet or only part of the way. This determination will rest on whether the closet will need to accommodate dresses or long coats.
A man's closet can probably accommodate two full-width hanging rods. Most men's shirts or jackets only extend to a maximum of 38 inches when hung up. Men's pants extend only 27 inches on average when folded over a hanger.
Women's dresses, however, can extend to an average length of up to 68 inches when hung up. Therefore, if you plan to hang a number of dresses or long coats in the closet, at least some of the hanging space should be uninterrupted from the top hanging rod to the ground. This will mean using a partial-width hanging rod for the lower closet rod.
While it is best to adjustment the height of the hanging rods to accommodate the height of the person who will be using the closet most, a standard rule of thumb is that the top closet rod should be hung 80 to 82 inches up from the floor, while the bottom rod should be hung about 40 inches from the floor. Suits should hang on the top rod, while pants and shirts should go on the bottom. If the closet will be shared, the taller person should hang his clothes on the top rod. Also allow space for dresses and long coats to hang either from the top rod or on a separate rod elsewhere in the closet.
