Install A Home Security System

In many scenarios you will pay more to have your home security system installed than the actual cost of the system. The process is fairly simple if you own a drill, however, and you can do it in about an hour. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Decide what entrance you want your alarm activation and deactivation keypad near. The alarm keypad should be in close proximity of the door. Also, the wireless routing unit should in the same location as the keypad.

2. Locate the closet nearest to the keypad entrance with an electric plug outlet on the outside wall. This is where you will install your router. The purpose for installing it in the closet is for discretion. Your keypad will go on the outside wall of the closet where the router is.

3. Plug the gray-phone-line-type cord in the back of the router and let it hang with the other white and black preconnected cords. Drill the attachment brackets into the wall and then slide the router on with the cords hanging. Be sure you install it inside the same wall the keypad will be on and where the outlet is. The black and white hanging cords will be long. Check the length to be sure they will go through and reach the plug with some slack. The router should be installed at least 6 feet high.

4. Outline the keypad on the outside wall with a pencil where you plan to install it. Be sure that it is not so low that the cords cannot reach it through the wall. Make a pencil in the middle of the keypad outline. Using a 6- to 8-inch drill bit to drill a hole through the wall. Run the gray cord through the hole.

5. Plug the phone line into the keypad and drill the keypad into the wall securely. Drill another hole with the 6- to 8-inch drill bit right near the plug outlet. Run the remaining white and black cords through the hole. Your home security system will come with a black and a white adapter. The adapter must be connected to the black and white cords coming through the wall. Everything is color-coded for easy connection.

6. Install your contacts on all entry ways, including sliding doors, back doors and side doors. Most security systems come with four contacts. Contacts let you know when a door has been breached. To install your contacts, attach the provided mounting strips: the bottom half to the door and the top half to the wall molding around the door. They must be aligned precisely and be close together. When the door opens and closes, they should nearly brush each other.

7. Install your motion sensor in the top corner of your great room facing the main door. The motion sensor also uses the provided mounting strips. The system will activate itself once you plug it in.
