Organize your closet to use the shelf space wisely.
If you battle clutter in the closet, assessing your organizational approach may help you win the war. If items are not hanging up, contain them neatly. Place small items that don't have a spot on hangers or hooks in baskets or bins. Use closet space near the ceiling to hold the baskets or bins with shoes and items like lingerie, scarves and hats. You may find you have more room in your closet than you thought when you use all the available shelf space. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Remove everything you store on the high shelves in the closet so you can organize the items.
2. Throw or give away everything you don't think you will wear or use anymore.
3. Sort the items you want to keep to find those you can hang on hooks or hangers, such as belts and jackets. Install hooks on the closet walls or the inside of the closet door to hang these items neatly.
4. Place the remaining items that need containers into separate piles. For example, make a pile of hats, a pile of scarves and a pile of lingerie. Place pairs of shoes in plastic shoe boxes; put them on the highest closet shelf if you have enough space. This is especially useful for storing off-season shoes.
5. Fill the bins or baskets with the items you separated into piles. Place the items, neatly folded, in the containers. Cover the bins.
6. Label the sides of the bins or baskets with a label maker. List the items in each basket or bin so you can see what is in the containers at a glance without removing them from the shelf.
7. Stow the bins and baskets on the shelf. Stack bins containing the things you use least often and off-season items on the shelf nearest the ceiling.
8. Reorganize the closet shelf each season to bring the off-season items back down so you can use them. Place current off-season items in bins nearest the ceiling.
