Using flyers to advertise your business is an effective way to tell neighbors and local businesses about the work you do without spending a lot of money. Easy to make on your home computer and printer, a good home improvement flyer will boast your skills and certifications and get you those job leads you need.
Instructions
1. Open your desktop publishing program. A flyer does not require any special paper or folds, so a plain 8.5 by 11 inch page set up or a flyer template will work fine for your home improvement flyer.
2. Type in your headline. The headline is the attention getter and should feature your business name or motto. Insert your text following your software instructions but do not format it as yet. Simply type in the headline in the default font and size. A typical headline may be something like "Jone's Do-It-All Home Improvements."
3. Insert text that highlights the types of projects you are skilled to do. Your flyer should define the types of jobs you are skilled at doing. Think "bullet points" and list things like, "Bathroom Renovations, Kitchen Updates, Custom Closets," and any specialty you want to advertise.
4. Focus on your certifications and experience. Listing your certifications and licenses shows people you are professional and insured, and that you have the knowledge to back up your advertising. Include a line that says you will provide references to give yourself an extra edge.
5. Type in your business phone number and webpage address to create a bottom margin on your flyer. You'll highlight and resize the font later to make it more eye-catching.
6. Add some graphics along with your business logo. If you don't have a business logo think about using some before and after pictures of your work, some photos of your work truck, or tools or clip art related to home improvement.
7. Place a large image on the left hand upper side of the flyer and resize other images to place on the right hand side of the flyer, and along the bottom. Use about three images for a flyer. Format the images by selecting a "wrap" option so that the images and the text all fit together seamlessly.
8. Format your text by highlighting areas and adjusting the font size to fit the flyer. Make the headline and phone number the largest, with the rest of the information in a readable font size of at least 14 points--depending on the style of the font. Use a decorative font for your business name and a plainer font for the rest of the information. Put your contact information in bold.
