Organizing your shoes makes it easy to quickly find the pair you want.
Stop wasting your precious time and energy hunting around for that misplaced shoe. Having proper shoe storage in your closet can eliminate a footwear fiasco by making your favorite sneakers, pumps and wedges easily accessible. With a variety of organizational options ranging from free-standing shoe racks to hanging compartments, a little thought and planning can determine the appropriate solution for your storage needs. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Assess your closet space and decide how much room you want to dedicate to your shoe storage. Hanging racks are perfect if you don't have much closet space. They hang over the door or directly on the clothes rod. Available in a variety of colors and materials, hanging racks often come with several compartments, each housing one pair of shoes.
If you have ample closet space, a shoe rack is your best bet. You can line up multiple pairs on horizontal shelves or store single pairs in a free-standing cubbie or drawer system.
2. Measure how much space each pair of shoes occupies. Take into account whether the shoes will be stored side-by-side or on top of each other. These measurements will determine the length, width and height of your rack or shelf. Choose a storage system with customizable or adjustable shelves to accommodate taller shoes such as boots.
3. Install your new storage system. Assemble racks and shelves according to manufacturer's instructions and place them out of the way of traffic, so you don't trip over the rack. Place the rack out of the way of hanging clothes such as pants or long dresses. This allows you to easily view your collection and select your shoes.
Hang over-the-door organizers over the back of the door and make sure you can close the door without difficulty. Place storage units that hang on the clothes rod where you can easily access the compartments. Constantly pushing clothes out of the way to reach your shoes is an easily avoidable hassle.
4. Arrange your shoes in a logical fashion. Keep more frequently worn footwear more easily accessible than shoes you wear sporadically.
If your clothes are arranged by season or color, do the same with your shoes. This makes it easier to put together a coordinating outfit.
Accommodate an extensive shoe collection by organizing footwear in a way which narrows your search most quickly. Arranging shoes by a specific category such as color may work better for you than a broad category such as season. However, you may find it practical to display them one season at a time to reduce clutter.
Pack out-of-season shoes in a box for under-the-bed storage or in bins on other closet shelves.
Pack formal shoes worn only for special occasions, in clear plastic shoe boxes with air holes (to let shoes breathe).
5. Keep closet chaos under wraps by replacing shoes immediately after you take them off. Make space for new shoes as soon as you return from the store with them. Do seasonal cleanings and discard unwanted pairs to keep your collection relevant and fresh. Avoid clutter by adding additional storage space if you find yourself running out of room.
