Types Of Closets & Their Purposes

Adjustable shelves and drawers can be altered to meet storage needs as they change.

People have a tendency to hold on to items, from clothes to canned food to towels. There are many different types of closets to store it all in, and keeping each one organized will make it easier to find what you need when you need it. Closets do not have to be built in; many homes do not have adequate storage space, so freestanding cabinets and closets can be substituted. Does this Spark an idea?

Reach-In Closet

Many closets in homes today are reach-in, or wall closets. These are the most common type and are frequently used for clothes storage. Featuring one long hanger rod extending across the wall with a shelf above, they are not always the most efficient use of storage space. Adding shelving and organizers will help to customize the storage to meet your individual needs.

Walk-In Closet

Walk-in closets are considered luxurious and are less common since they take up more space than other types. A small one may have just enough room for you to stand in the middle of clothes hung in a U-shape. A large walk-in closet may have room for a folding table, bench, mirror, ironing board and ample shelving and hanging space to store every clothing item, accessory, shoe and gadget. No matter the size, walk-in closets need to have some type of lighting to illuminate the contents.

Linen Closet

Commonly located near the bedrooms and bathrooms, linen closets are used to store bedding, towels and tissues. They also end up being the storage place for extra toiletries, medicine and cleaning supplies. It is important to leave space above each stack for air circulation. You may also want to line the shelves with acid-free paper to keep linens clean and fresh smelling.

Coat Closet

Next to the front door, coat closets are used to store more than just coats; they also are for hats, scarves, gloves, umbrellas and handbags. Choose a metal hanging rod and wood hangers to support the weight of heavy coats. Always leave extra space on the rod and extra hangers for guests' coats.

Utility Closet

Not every home has a utility closet, but they are useful for storing items such as vacuums, brooms, mops, cleaning supplies and ironing boards. This type of closet is typically found in the laundry room or service area of the home.

Pantry

Found in the kitchen, pantries are a convenient place to store dry foods and large cooking equipment such as a stand mixer, slow-cooker or rice cooker. Store items in a pantry off the floor on shelves or in baskets, so they do not get dirty. To keep the food insect-free, periodically empty all the shelves, so you can wipe them down to remove loose food particles.
