Instructions
Painting
1. Choose light colors for a square shaped room. For a narrow small bedroom, paint the shorter walls in a darker color and the longer walls in light hues to make if appear wider.
2. Paint the ceiling in a lighter shade in the same tones as the walls instead of an eye-stopping bright white. Paint any existing molding around the ceilings in the same colors as the walls or ceiling to avoid stopping the eye from moving upwards as well.
3. Paint a larger pattern on the walls, versus a small one, if you want a more interesting look. Only the outline of large squares or other geometric shapes, for example, allow you to bring in a favorite bright or dark color without overwhelming the space.
Decorating
4. Buy multipurpose pieces of furniture that fit in with the style of the room. Examples include a loft bed that also contains a dresser and desk area underneath for a kid's room or a Murphy bed that folds up into the wall with bookcases on either side for an adult space.
5. Buy multipurpose storage solutions when decorating a small bedroom as well. For example, a trunk in front of a futon doubles as a table for drinks, a corner armoire can house clothes as well as a small TV or a hanging shelving unit that has hooks screwed into the bottom for hats or necklaces.
6. Utilize hidden storage areas to their full capacity. For example under the bed roll away containers and custom closet built-ins can ensure that all of your clothes and accessories can be organized for easy access.
7. Hang a large framed mirror opposite a window in lieu of other artwork. Not only will this technique make the room appear larger, you can tuck photographs, clippings and other paper mementos into the frames for personal touches.
8. Install an overhead light that is on a dimmer that will give you extra light when you need it. Hang a reading lamp on the wall and install other task lighting as needed.
