Closet Maintenance

Maintaining a closet makes it easier to store items.

Closets are an important part of your home, because they store clothes, shoes, accessories and other items. When closet fixtures deteriorate or break, quick fixes give you faster access to your things. There's no need to put up with inconveniences like malfunctioning doors or sagging clothes rods. Does this Spark an idea?

Sliding Doors

Sliding doors frequently break on a closet, skidding or not opening at all. Fixing this problem is fairly simple, however. First, clear away all debris on the sliding door track and retest the doors. If a door still skids, take down the door by lifting it up and out of the track. Replace the sliding rollers on the bottom and top of the door by pulling the old ones out and inserting new ones. Replace the door and test. If the problem persists, take out all the sliding doors, and remove and replace the sliding door track by unscrewing it from the floor with a screwdriver and installing a new one.

Bifold Closet Doors

Bifold closet doors open and fold up like an accordion on a track. Problems with bifold doors are corrected by replacing the rollers or tracks, just like sliding closet doors. However, if the doors stick, or close awkwardly, adjusting the doors is the best move. When bifold doors sag towards the center of the closet, simply open the doors, lift up on the bottom of the door near the outside corner and push the corner towards the door jamb to reset the pin hinge. This tilts the door back in line with the door jamb.

Sagging Closet Rods

Closet rods sag when too many clothes are hung on them. To fix this problem, remove the clothes and take down the rod by unscrewing the round rod brackets from the wall with a screwdriver. Spackle the mounting holes on the wall and let them dry for 12 hours. Remount closet rod brackets on the wall and install a new, metal closet rod. Add an angle support in the middle of the closet rod by mounting it to the wall with drywall anchors and a screwdriver.

Closet Door Handles and Knobs

When closet door handles and knobs break or become loose, there is a simple fix. Most round knobs screw into the door. Unscrew them by turning the knob counterclockwise. Apply wood glue to the screw and backside of the handle, then screw the knob back in. To repair a handle, unscrew the mounting screws with a screwdriver. Fill the holes with wood putty and let them dry for the recommended time. Remount the handles with new hardware and a power screwdriver. Use larger-diameter screws to hold the handle in place if necessary.
