Organizing Laundry Rooms

No matter how large or small your laundry room, there are ways to organize the space to increase its efficiency. If you don't have a laundry room but only a laundry space in your apartment or home, these tips can help you as well. Does this Spark an idea?

Organization Tips

Write down what you want to accomplish when organizing your laundry room. Making a plan prior to beginning your organization project will help you follow through each step and accomplish your organization project quickly and effectively. Organizing the room, once you've cleared out any unnecessary clutter, should take only about three hours.

What You Need

In order to organize your laundry room, you will need clear plastic tubs with lid to hold laundry supplies, a hamper with compartments, a flat tabletop or foldout table, and a hanging rack or curtain rod.

Where To Begin

Remove any unnecessary items from the area. The laundry room often becomes the "catch-all" room, so remove pet supplies, shoes, hats and other items not specifically for the laundry.

Sort through your laundry supplies. Place pretreatment sprays, sticks, detergents, fabric softener and other supplies in one of your plastic bins. Do not buy more laundry products than can fit in your bin.

Hanging Clothes

Place a hanging rack or closet rod in your laundry room. On this you can place clothes on hangers that will go straight to the closet from the laundry room. If you have members of your family that prefer to have their clothes hung up, give each the responsibility of picking up their clothes on laundry day in order to keep your laundry room organized. Keep a supply of hangers nearby.

Foldout Table

If you have space, a foldout table or tabletop lets you fold and stack loads of laundry as soon as they are dry. If you have front-loading machines, have the flat surface installed above.

Sectioned Hamper

Sectioned hampers let you organize in two ways. First, you can use section for a separate person in the household. Or you can divide the hamper based on washing needs. One section could be for whites, one for darks and one for hand washing.

Additional Items

Other items that are handy in the laundry room include a trashcan for lint and used dryer sheets; small jars or boxes to hold items found in pockets, safety pins and buttons; and a bin or bag for socks missing their mates.
