cover a closet?
Closet doors help to define the style of a room, but also need to be functional. Beautiful heavy wood swinging doors can add character, but may make it difficult to access the contents of the closet. It is best to review the types of doors available for closets, choose the one that will be most functional for your needs, and then find one of that type that fits the style of your room. Does this Spark an idea?
Bi-fold Doors
Bi-fold hinge
Bi-fold doors have hinges from top to bottom. Generally, a small knob is used to pull them open. A sliding track system is on the top or bottom of the door that allows it to simultaneously open and fold up. These doors work well for closets, particularly in a small space. They fold to a compact size and make nearly the full length of the closet accessible.
Sliding Doors
Sliding doors generally come in sets of two. Each door runs on its own track, one behind the other. They can slide to the same side to access one side of the closet at a time, or each slide to an opposite side to close the closet. They don't allow for the same level of accessibility as other options, but usually cost a bit less.
Pocket Doors
Pocket doors work similarly to sliding doors in that they run on separate tracks. Instead of sliding to one side at the same time, pocket doors slide onto pockets on the walls on opposite sides of the closet. Because the wall must be cut away for the pocket, the installation of these is a bit more complicated than other doors. They give the advantage of maximum access to the entire closet.
Classic Doors
You can choose to use standard doors with knobs. These swinging doors usually work best in a large space since they require some room to open. A small closet can use one door and close in a conventional fashion. A large closet is best suited to a set of French doors that latch together in the middle.
Fabric Options
If you would like to use a less traditional form of closet door, you can choose to install large curtains in place of doors. They should hang from the header of the closet down to the floor to hide the entire length of the space. Use tiebacks to pull the curtains away from the interior of the closet.
