Find Space Without Closets

A lack of closet space can make organizing a challenge.

Closets are used throughout a house to store a variety of items, from clothing in bedrooms to pots and pans in the kitchen. When a house or apartment lacks adequate closet space, finding room for everything becomes a challenge. Knowing how and where to create additional storage areas takes a little creativity and some shuffling of items around to achieve an organized and clutter-free environment. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine the types of items that need to be stored. Make a list of items and group them together in categories such as clothing, shoes, mementos, books and magazines, paperwork, coats and miscellaneous.

2. Purchase freestanding wardrobes on which to hang clothing. Measure the area where the standing wardrobe rack will be placed prior to purchasing to ensure that it fits. For example, if using a wardrobe in a bedroom, first select the location for the rack and measure the space available. Hang clothes, purses and coats from the rack.

3. Install shoe racks directly on walls in bedrooms to hang shoes from to free up floor space in the closets that you do have. Use the floor areas for storing items in boxes and hang all shoes on the racks.

4. Install hooks at the front and back doors and also in hallways. Use hooks to store coats, purses, hats, scarves and backpacks. Make sure to hang the hooks high enough, so that the space below the hooks can further be used for additional storage space. Use benches or storage chests under the hooks to store additional items.

5. Use hanging racks and hooks throughout a kitchen area to store pots and utensils when a lack of closet space exists in a kitchen area. Use freestanding pantries as additional storage options. Install shelves throughout the kitchen for even more storage space.

6. Use hooks, towel racks and standing shelves throughout bathrooms to store towels, linens and bath products when closet space is lacking or inadequate. Be creative and store items in unique ways to keep the area looking organized. For example, when storing towels in the open on a shelf, roll the towels as opposed to simply folding them in squares.

7. Use under-bed storage boxes for books, paperwork, magazines and additional items. Make sure to measure the free space under the bed and the height of the bed prior to purchasing the boxes to make sure that they fit under the bed. Use as many boxes as possible under beds to create extra areas for storing items.

8. Consider renting or leasing a storage unit located close to where you live, Do this if you have used all available space in your home and still have items that do not fit, yet need to be kept. Call around and check prices and select the smallest storage unit for your needs that offers the best price. Move all items in to the storage unit that are not needed on a regular or routine basis such as mementos and holiday decorations.
