Organize Storage In A Small Home

When you have a small living space, you need home storage solutions to maximize your storage space. The key is to find space in your small home that is not being used. Some call this hidden storage. Look at your home with a new eye to finding those hidden spaces and organize storage in a small home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Put your bed on risers to create storage space under the bed. You can purchase bed risers online or at a home supply store. These raise your bed so that you can store things underneath. Cover the space with a dust ruffle.

2. Build a frame under your bed and then cover with plywood doors, painted any color to match your decor. This can create a lot of storage space for out-of-season clothes, extra blankets, or toys in a child's room. If you put plywood on the top you can get rid of your bed frame and just put your mattress on top of the storage unit. In a child's room this has the bonus making it impossible for toys, clothes, homework and stray socks to get lost under the bed.

3. Look for places in your house where you can install a shelf. Use L-brackets to install shelves over door frames where you can display a collection, or stash books, compact discs or stuffed animals.

4. Create a spare closet by installing a curtain across one end of a narrow room. Hang the curtain on a rod or on a wire stretched tightly across the room near the ceiling. Store boxes behind the curtain. You can also put a clothing rack and shelves for an extra closet.

5. Install shelves about 18 inches below the ceiling in a child's bedroom to display stuffed animals. Install a deep shelf 18 to 24 inches in the bathroom to store towels.

6. Make a storage table out of a new plastic garbage can, which you can fill with out-of-season clothes, camping equipment or extra blankets. Top the garbage can with a round wooden top, which you can buy at the hardware store. Cover it with a tablecloth big enough to reach the floor.

7. Keep a rectangular laundry basket on the closet floor to collect shoes.

8. Use the space on top of kitchen cabinets to store casserole dishes and mixing bowls to free up valuable cabinet space.

9. Mount a pegboard on the kitchen wall, painted to match your decor. Use it to hang anything that can accommodate a hook: pots and pans, cookie sheets, mixing spoons, measuring cups, and bottle brushes.

10. Store extra sheets in the space between the mattress and box springs.

11. Buy furniture that has storage space inside, or look for how you can duplicate it using what you already own. If your coffee table only has a top and no storage space underneath, purchase large baskets that will slide under to store magazines, games or books.

12. Look around your home for places you can put a plastic storage tower. These come in various sizes and the drawers allow you to organize a lot of small items. You might be able to fit a narrow one into the bathroom beside the toilet to stash your hair appliances or extra toilet paper.
