Make Shelves For A Closet

Adding shelves to a closet is an easy, cost-efficient way to add storage space to your home. Depending on what you need to store, shelves can hold items large to small. The possibilities are limited only by your ingenuity and the size of the closet. Here's a simple design for closet shelves that will work in many standard-sized closets. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width, depth, and height of your closet with a tape measure. Then, on a piece of paper, draw out a plan for your shelves. You should decide on how many shelves you want, how far apart they are spaced, and how deep they are.

2. Mark the back wall of the closet with the locations of your shelves. Measure up from the floor with your tape measure to make your marks, and draw a line across the wall to mark the shelve locations.

3. Using the lines you've drawn as guides, mount shelf brackets on the wall. Screw each bracket into the wall using wall anchors, screws and your screwdriver. To ensure that the brackets hold the weight of the shelves and the shelves' contents, space them from 12 to 16 inches apart. Ensure that the brackets you purchase are the same depth as your shelves are wide.

4. Cut your boards to the width of the closet and place them on the shelf brackets. The shelf brackets will have small screw hole openings on the bottom--use 3/4-inch wood screws to attach the shelves to the brackets so that they do not slip.
