Installing rods on cinder blocks requires drilling.
Closet rods are one of the main components of any closet system and provide a sturdy hanging location for clothes hangers. Rods come in a wide variety of colors and finishes and adjust to fit any closet width. Most closets are made of drywall or plaster, but some are made of cinder blocks. You may install a closet rod on cinder block walls using a slightly modified process with special anchors. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Clear everything out of the closet so that you have room to work. Walk to the cider block wall on the left side of the closet. Place the end of a tape measure at the back corner of the wall and measure out at least 18 to 24 inches. Draw a mark on the block wall with a pencil.
2. Repeat the process on the right cinder block wall to create an identical mark.
3. Hold the closet rod up to the walls, aligning the ends with the pencil marks. Decide if you like the height of the rod and adjust it up and down until you do. Hold the rod in place with one hand and draw a new pencil mark above or below the first one if needed. Measure the new location and adjust the other mark using the tape measure.
4. Hold one of the cup-shaped mounts up to the left pencil mark, ensuring the open end faces up. Insert a pencil into each screw hole to mark them on the wall. Repeat the process on the right wall.
5. Put on protective eye wear and insert a 3/16-inch diameter masonry drill bit into a power drill. Drill 1-inch deep holes into the cinder block at the location of each marked screw hole.
6. Push a plastic masonry wall anchor into each hole, tapping them with a hammer until the top is flush with the wall.
7. Place the left cup mount back up to the wall and align the screw holes with the wall anchors. Insert the screws provided with the rod into each hole and tighten them with a power drill. Repeat the process to install the right cup mount.
8. Raise the closet rod above the cup mounts and slowly lower it into the mounts by slipping the ends into the open spaces.
