Fix A Floor Guide For Sliding Closet Doors

If you have sliding doors that constantly jump off the tracks, you might need to fix the floor guide to keep the sliding panels straight. The floor guide is the small channel guide at the bottom of the doors. Over time, as your floor and door frame settle, it is necessary to adjust the guide to keep the panels level. If necessary, replacement floor guides are available at home improvement centers. Fixing the floor guide for a sliding closet door requires removing the guide from the floor completely. This will allow you to level the panels before securing the floor guide in place. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Move the two sliding panels to one side of the closet opening. This provides the space necessary to slide the floor guide from both sliding panels.

2. Remove the screws securing the floor guide to the floor, using a Phillips screwdriver. There is usually one screw on the side facing the inside of the closet and one screw on the side facing outside. Some guides have a screw in the center or in each sliding door channel.

3. Pull the slide away from both sliding panels and off the floor. Inspect the guide for damage. If the guide channels are bent, replace the floor guide.

4. Coat wooden toothpicks with wood glue, and stick them inside the screw holes in the floor. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly, usually at least 24 hours. Cut the toothpicks flush to the floor with a utility knife.

5. Slide the floor guide under the panels, ensuring that the panels go into each guide channel. Half of the guide should be under the panels, with the other half away from the panels.

6. Hold a level against the face of the outer sliding panel. Pull or push the sliding panel as necessary until it is level. Mark the mounting holes for the floor guide on the floor with a pencil.

7. Remove the floor guide. Drill pilot holes at your marks with a drill bit half the diameter of the securing screws. Slide the floor guides back under the door, lining up the mounting holes with the pilot holes. Secure with the wood screws.
