Mix Water With My Radiator Liquid

Water can be added to car radiators.

Yes. If your engine is overheating and you've got a bottle of water in your car, don't hesitate to pour the water in. It may help you avoid seriously damaging your engine.

Antifreeze

What you pour in your car radiator depends on the manufacturer's recommendations and whether or not you live in a cold winter climate. Most cars take a mixture of water and glycol coolant commonly called antifreeze. The mixture has a higher boiling point than plain water and can cool your engine more efficiently.

Water Alone

Water alone will do in an emergency, but as soon as possible you should add in the recommended coolant.

Troubleshooting

If your dashboard gauge reads hot, pull over immediately before further damaging your engine. Broken fan belts, leaking hoses, punctured radiators and failed water pumps are some of the common causes of overheated engines. These can be fixed at relatively low cost. Continuing to drive an overheated engine, assuming it continues to work, can melt some of the internal parts.

Warning

If you are on the side of the road with an overheated engine, don't open the water reservoir without first placing a dry cloth over the cap. Ease it open to let the steam slowly escape. If you open it suddenly without a cloth, you could give yourself a painful steam burn.

Also, animals think poisonous coolant tastes yummy. Flush or dry up any spills after filling your radiator to keep pets safe.
